Bimini: So Near, but So Far Away!

Even though the Bimini Islands are only 40 miles off the US coast, a vacation here is perfect for those who want to get away from it all and soak up some sun in a world less traveled. This group of islands is made up of South Bimini, North Bimini, and a number of smaller islets and cays. The islands first came to national attention thanks to Ernest Hemingway, who spent time fishing here, gaining inspiration for his classic novel, The Old Man and the Sea. Bimini has something to satisfy every vacationer's sweet tooth. A day's itinerary can include sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, fishing, or spending a lazy day lounging on a gorgeous beach.

Alice Town on North Bimini is the largest "city" in the Bimini Islands. Alice Town has all the charms one would expect from a beach community that has its soul in the wisps of yesterday's memories. Life is slower here. Citizens stop for an afternoon chat, and end up sharing dinner as well. An interesting attraction is The Compleat Angler Hotel Bar and Museum. There is a small collection of "Papa Hemingway's" writing, and some photos of the writer spanning the years 1935-37.

If your suntan needs a touch-up, Bimini has a beach with your name on it. You can either spend time on a crowded beach where activities like wind surfing, parasailing, volleyball, wake boarding, and others are offered; or you can find a quiet, secluded spot of sand to pitch your towel. Whatever your beach preference, the lack of high rises makes the beaches rife with spectacular views of the surrounding Atlantic. For a secluded island feeling, hop in a boat and visit one of the smaller cays that surround the two main islands.

Like Papa Hemingway, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Bimini in search of the perfect fishing expedition. This is a sports fishing paradise. Whether your particular style is reef fishing, deep-sea fishing, bone fishing, or bottom fishing, the waters off of Bimini are teeming with enough fish to satisfy any appetite. The Bahamas are known for their prodigious angling records. Over 50 world-record-setting fish have been caught in these waters! Toss in a line and try and land the big one!

Diving in the Bimini Islands, like the rest of the Bahamas, is regarded as one of the world's best scuba diving sites. Whether your tastes include reef diving, wall diving, blue hole diving (underwater caves), wreck diving, or shark diving, the area has everything you could ask for in a dive site. One of the most popular dive sites in Bimini is the Wreck of the Sapona, located in only 10-15 feet of water. Built by Henry Ford to be used as a troop carrier during WWI, the Sapona ran aground during a hurricane, and was subsequently used as a target for naval pilots. The holes in the giant hull make swimming in and out of the wreck an easy proposition, even for beginning divers.

Only 40 miles separate Bimini from the mainland, but it seems that is just enough distance to give one the feeling of a total vacation getaway. Bimini is part of the Bahama Islands where the water is the clearest of anywhere on earth. Both Christopher Columbus and Ponce de Leon found the islands irresistible. The beaches and teeming waters offer a solace and comfort not easily found in our fast moving societies of today. Bimini is calling all travelers, singing a harmonious island song. Can you hear the music?
