Cat Island: Away From it All in the Bahamas!

Cat Island, one of the Bahama Islands, is the place to go to escape the more touristy areas you think of when you ponder a trip to the Bahamas. This island is a look back in time to when the Bahama Islands were basically farming and agricultural communities. Although the hustle and bustle may be lost, there are still plenty of activities to pique a visitor's interest. A day's itinerary can include scuba diving, fishing, swimming, parasailing, snorkeling, shelling, or just lounging on a beautiful beach as you watch the day go by.

The main settlement on the island is New Bight, located on the southern portion of the island. New Bight is a relaxed, sleepy little village that comes alive every August during the Cat Island Regatta, when hundreds of sea captains bring all manner of vessels to the area for a week-long party.

New Bight is a great jumping off point for some of the island's spectacular beaches. The most popular one is Fernandez Bay, located just north of New Bight. This is a popular beach with surfers due to the big waves generated by the windy conditions in the area. One of the most beautiful beaches is Greenwood Beach (also called Pink Sand Beach). This beach extends for 10 miles, and you are virtually assured a place out of earshot from other visitors. Just outside of New Bight, ask directions for a dirt road that leads to hidden Sandy Point Beach. This smallish beach is in virtual seclusion and makes for the perfect getaway location.

Cat Island, like the rest of the Bahamas, has garnered the reputation as one of the world's premier scuba diving sites. Whether your tastes include reef diving, wall diving, blue hole diving (underwater caves), wreck diving, or shark diving, the area has everything you could ask for in a dive site.

Hikers will want to walk up the trail that leads to Mount Alvernia, the highest point in all the Bahamas at 206 feet. The mountain gives the adventurous a 360 degree view of the island, as well as the outlying Bahamas. At the summit of this mountain lies a small monastery built by Father Jerome, who was known for building cathedrals and convents throughout the islands.

Some of the best fishing anywhere can be found in the Bahamas. Cat Island is no exception. Whether your penchant is for deep-sea fishing, reef fishing, bottom fishing, or bone fishing(a type of fly fishing aimed at snaring bone fish), you will have ample opportunity on Cat Island for exploring your particular style.

A vacation on Cat Island is an escape from all things annoying. Sit on a pink sand beach and let your troubles drift out to sea with the tides. Snorkel or dive on the reef and say "hello" to the local sea life. Hike one of the many nature trails that wind their way through the interior of the island. Hire a charter to take you out to sea in search of the perfect Marlin hangout. The Bahamas are all about fun in the sun, and Cat Island sets the standard!
