Long Island: Lean and Lovely in the Bahamas!

Long Island comes honestly by its name. The island, shaped like a green bean, stretches some 80 miles, but is only 4 miles at its widest point. Located at the southern end of the Bahamian chain, Long Island was visited by Columbus, who named the island "Fernandina" after Queen Ferdinand of Spain. Today, Long Island is known for its vegetables and cattle, which supply much of the farm goods throughout the Bahamas. It is also a paradise for those seeking a vacation in the sun. A day's itinerary can include scuba diving, fishing, swimming, parasailing, snorkeling, shelling, or just lounging on a beautiful beach as you watch the day go by.

Long Island has been relatively untouched by tourism. This means a day at the beach is usually a secluded affair with just you, your party, a good book, and the ever-present sunshine above the turquoise waters. Long Island's beaches are some of the most scenic in the Bahamas. Cape Santa Maria, which occupies the northern tip of the island, is one long swath of white sand dipping into the shallow ocean. This is a great place to pull out some snorkeling gear and see what lies beneath the waves. McKann's Bay, on the western coast, is backed by tall sand dunes encircling the area, making for an excellent secluded getaway.

Long Island, like the rest of the Bahamian Islands, is considered the mother lode in scuba diving and snorkeling circles. Whether your tastes include reef diving, wall diving, blue hole diving (underwater caves), wreck diving, or shark diving, the area has everything you could possibly look for during a dive based vacation. If you want to see some really big fish, head to Grouper Valleys. Large jewfish, some of them weighing as much as 700 pounds, mingle with sharks of the same size. The fish try to hide themselves in the sandy trenches, but due to their size, hiding is not an option! Conception Island was named by Columbus on his famous 1492 voyage. The Bahamian National Trust designated the island as a protected environment for turtle breeding, hence the island is less traveled and teeming with marine life. Brain coral, bull sharks, sea anemone, and flamingo tongues are all a part of the diving environment.

All of the Bahamas are known as a mecca for sports fishermen. Over 50 world record fish have been caught in Bahamian waters. Long Island is no exception. The current fave rave on Long Island is bone fishing. Spin casters and fly fishermen alike have discovered the wonders of a battle with these fish known for their power and speed. The fish usually are found in schools of 100 or more, making for quick bursts of exciting action.

A vacation on Long Island is a extended moment in the sun: a never ending summer where the beaches are warm, the fish are plentiful, and the sights are spectacular. The beaches aside, Long Island has plenty of other ways to enjoy her many gifts. Head to Cartwright's Caves, once used by the Lucayan Indians. Visit Salt Pond, and see the beautiful St Joseph's Anglican Church, then hike the trails overlooking the waters on both sides of the island. Play golf on a course overlooking the ocean. You won't even mind the double-bogeys! Rent a boat and chart a course for uninhabited cays or one of the many hidden coves. Long Island is a joy ride with plenty to do for every vacationer. All you need is a ticket!
