Every season provides an outlet for adventure, and while the towns and are growing and their reputations spreading far and wide, this is still a destination characterized by wilderness, preservation and serenity.


Sophisticates probably know that El Dorado County and the Mammoth Lakes vicinity has surged forward as a wine region, and while it’s not quite Napa Valley, some people prefer the thinner crowds and quieter experience (and you can find a mean zinfandel, too).


Lake Jenkinson makes for a peaceful backdrop to a vacation rental and will tempt you out for some swimming and boating. Golf courses, hiking trails, lots of ranchland and cozy little towns help to complete the idyllic scene, so plan to do some antique shopping and farmstand hopping - you can even pan for gold if you want the full historic California experience.


And in the winter the snow descends, along with scores of serious skiers who’d prefer to steer clear of ritzier spots like Vail and Aspen. Excellent conditions for ice skating, snowmobiling, tubing and snowshoeing exist as well, especially if you pick out a ski in/ski out condo or a cabin that’s nestled right next to one of the many lodges or lifts (try Canyon Lodge, Sunstone or Juniper Springs for starters).


That’s not all; don’t forget about the Yosemite Area and the Sequoia National Park Area as places to enjoy the ancient and impressive forests as well as an array of inviting vacation rentals.
