Bruges: Europe's Medieval Treat!
Belgium, about the size of Maryland in the US, is a hidden gem. Being the capital of the European Union has made Belgium a multi-cultural getaway. Brussels, where both French and Dutch are spoken, is officially bilingual. Belgians pride themselves on their appetites, claiming they eat as much as the Germans and as well as the French. Chocolate is a favorite craving. Beer is the beverage of choice. One city in particular, Bruges, offers vacationers an impressive glimpse into the country's medieval past. Take some time to explore the back streets. Each turn in the corner reveals another hidden treasure.
Bruges is a museum unto itself. The intricate canals, Gothic architecture, sidewalk cafes, and hauntingly poignant art blend into one big mural of beauty. Begin your tour by visiting the Market Square and climb the Bell Tower. The square is ringed by banks, tons of restaurants, and serves as the heart of the city. Belfort, the bell tower, has presided over the city since 1300. The climb to the top brings stunning views of the city's environs.
Smaller, but more stunning, is Burg Square. This opulent area serves as the city's civic center, and was the historical birthplace of Bruges. In bygone days the square also housed the castle of the Count of Flanders. Today outdoor concerts are held here, and the area contains some of Bruges' most impressive architecture.
On the southwest corner of the Burg sits the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The church is famous for its relic of the blood of Christ, which, legend says, was brought back to Bruges after the Second Crusade. The large chapel is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture.
The Groeninge Museum houses an impressive collection of Flemish art. The eras covered are between the 14th and 20th centuries. There are 18 rooms in all covering everyone from Memling to Magritte. Notables include Jan Van Eyck's masterpiece, Madonna with Canon George Van der Paele, and Memling's Moreel Triptych.
Beer is an intricate part of Belgian cuisine. Belgium boasts more than 350 brands, more than any other country in the world. For an interesting tour into this valued commodity, take the tasting tour at the Straffe Hendrik Brewery. The motto given by the friendly staff is: "The components of beer are vitally necessary and contribute to a well-balanced life pattern. For life long equilibrium, drink Straffe Hendrik in moderation!" This credo permeates Bruggian society, and reflects the intimate relationship the country has with its favorite beverage.
Bruggians are also connoisseurs of fine chocolate. Windows of shop owners tempt passers by all over town. While Godiva is the most well known and widely produced brand, there are literally hundreds of local chocolatiers producing excellent, though less well known, varieties. The chocolate "hot spot" is The Chocolate Line, unique for all the styles of eclectic chocolate concoctions such as Havana cigar (marinated in rum, cognac, and Cuban tobacco leaves-thereby making it illegal in the US), lemon grass, spicy chili, and sheet upon sheet of crunchy cocoa bean!
Bruges is a Belgian walk on the medieval side. The town appears nearly as it did 400 years ago. Walk the cobblestone streets and feel the old city's memories as you nip in for some home made beer or chocolate. Shop for lace at one of the many stands along Market Square. Take a ride on one of the canal boats that will escort you to a totally different view of the city. Hop on a bicycle and see how the Bruggians commute to work. A vacation in Bruges will leave you with memories of a bygone era, and give you a respite from the intrusive modern world.
