More Charm than Cliché in the Hilo Area

A producer of macadamia nuts and the site of a yearly hula celebration, on paper Hilo may seem like a typical Hawaiian tourist attraction but it’s doubtful you’ll find that to be an apt description once you’ve spent a little time here.


Located on a bay on the northeastern coast of the Big Island, Hilo has a little bit of everything. Peaceful Botanical Gardens, the East Hawaii Cultural Center and plenty of luscious coastline should start to give you a solid idea. Perhaps some of it will be just what you expected, but after a stroll down Banyan Drive or a taste of delicious macadamia nut ice cream you’ll have no illusions that you’ve made it to a better place.
