Ayrshire: Lochs, Links, and Landmarks in Western Scotland!

The Ayrshire region of Scotland is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Rolling hills, dramatic ocean cliffs, forests, woodlands, pastures, and mountain peaks thrive in harmony providing a varied and wonderful setting for a Scotland vacation. A day's activities can include deep sea fishing off the coast, hiking, cycling, golfing, horseback riding, or visiting some of the important historical sights of the region.

Golf in Scotland is more a religion than a game. The Scots take their golf very seriously, always careful to abide by the rules and regulations with a dogged like zeal reflecting their loyalty to this "gentleman's game." The courses are cathedrals, and Ayrshire has more than its fair share. Consistently ranked as one of the world's best links courses, Royal Troon was created in 1878 by the hand of Willie Fernie, one of the great early British golfers. The course is one of the most famous in the world and has hosted the British Open on seven different occasions. A classic links course, positioning is more important than power, and the smallish greens require a deft putting stroke. Also in Ayrshire is the famous course at Turnberry Golf Club. Opened in 1949, Turnberry has garnered the reputation as one of the most beautiful in all of Scotland. The holes that sweep along the ocean offer incredible views in addition to formidable challenges. The course has hosted the British Open 3 times, and is more manicured than most of the Scottish courses. Designed by famous golf architect Mackenzie Ross, the links' layout uses tight fairways, gorse, and rocky crags as deterrents for wayward shots.

Deep sea fishing excursions can be hired in the seaside village of Dunure. Knowledgeable guides are at the ready to whisk visitors to prime fishing spots. Inland, rainbow and brown trout are teeming in the lochs and rivers of Ayrshire. Dunure Castle, a former coastal stronghold of ancient Scotland, also makes for an interesting visit while in the area.

History buffs will want to head inland a bit to the historic town of Stirling, and visit the Bannockburn Heritage Centre and Battlefield. This site is one of the most famous in Scottish history, for it was here in 1314 that Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, defeated the English and won independence for Scotland. A statue of the Bruce looking out over the battlefield is a major attraction. The centre also houses a statue of Scotland's favorite son, William Wallace, whose story became the subject of the Academy Award winning film Braveheart. Nearby Stirling castle is also a worthwhile visit.

The literary minded will want to pay a visit to the Burns National Heritage Park, and walk in the footsteps of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. Burns (1759-1796) achieved somewhat of a rock star status, writing poems aimed at social injustice. The park houses the original building where he grew up, Burns Cottage, as well as several other historically important sites of his early childhood. The Tam O'Shanter Experience uses laser disc technology to vividly bring to life one of Burns' most rousing works.

Ayrshire is Scotland's most diverse region. The mountains, valleys, lochs, rivers, streams, seaside cliffs, and rolling pastures offer vacationers an endless array of activities, sights, festivals, and active excursions. Ayrshire is also filled with memories of warrior poets, famous battles for Scotland's independence, and a love affair with the mischievous sea. Walk in the footsteps of Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Hear Burns' tales of woe in an era of cruel land owners. Visit long abandoned castles that once stood as proud bastions of Scotland's defense. Tee it up at one of the famous links courses and realize that, to a Scot, honor can be found in games of skill. A Scottish vacation is more than just a holiday. It is a glimpse into a guarded world of memory and myth.
