About Chesapeake Bay - Northern Neck Vacation Rentals
Life along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia is a life surrounded by waters. In the Northern Neck and the Middle Peninsula, the movements of the day are governed as much by the tide as they are by the stoplight since individuals are equally apt to be traveling by boat and by automobile. A vacation in this area is an adventure into the many rivers, inlets, streams, and creeks that empty into the Chesapeake Bay and finally into the Atlantic Ocean. A day's activity can include fishing, kayaking, water skiing, boating tours, or lazy floats down the Rappahannock or York Rivers.
Both the Northern Neck and the Middle Peninsula are a paradise for anglers of all intention. There are numerous marinas located throughout the waterways to provide the boater with service while local charter captains are available to offer their expertise to novice and professional fishermen.
The Northern Neck is bird watching heaven. With more than 6,500 acres of natural areas and preserves and 1,100 miles of shoreline, the Northern Neck is one of the few places on the Atlantic seaboard that still offers numerous habitats including salt and freshwater marshes, agricultural croplands, woodlands, and open fields. One of the best places to observe the various aviary species is Caledon Natural Area State Park. During the summer, this park is home to a large concentration of American Bald Eagles, ospreys, cormorants, pelicans, herons, and egrets. In the fall, a large contingency of Canada geese find their way to this area while tundra swans, snow geese, and other northern waterfowl make their homes here in the winter.
With over ninety-four square miles of flat, scenic back roads and more than 200 miles of coastline, Mathews County, on the Middle Peninsula, is noted for its bicycling, kayaking, canoeing, and hiking trails. For the inexperienced kayaker, there are guides available.
