About Ohio Vacation Rentals

The Marblehead Peninsula juts out into Lake Erie and serves as a compass by pointing vacationers to instant fun. Located in Ottawa County, the Marblehead Peninsula is part of the Lake Erie Islands region, a set of islands that offer excellent vacation spots in and around Lake Erie. The region is peppered with quaint little towns offering hand-made crafts, excellent restaurants, and plenty of outdoor fun. A day on the Marblehead Peninsula can include fishing, swimming, sailing, hiking, souvenir hunting, or just hanging out on a beach with a good book.

Where there is water, there is usually a beach for it to roll against. The Lake Erie Islands region is no exception. One of the most popular beach destinations in the area is East Harbor State Park near Marblehead. The park has over 7 miles of white sandy beaches just waiting to be tanned on and is actually a year-round playground. During the summer, swimming, sailing, and fishing rule the scene, while the winter's chill brings ice fishermen, cross country skiers, and snowmobilers to the park. More beach time can be spent at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park, home to the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. The park is another great swimming area and the top of the lighthouse provides wonderful views of Lake Erie.

Fishing is another must in the Lake Erie Islands. Known as the "Walleye Capital of the World," the region also sports an abundance of large and smallmouth bass, perch, saugeye, steelhead, and numerous other varieties. There are plenty of marinas available in Marblehead and Port Clinton that have boats waiting to whisk visitors to the best fishing holes. Pier fishing is also available at various points along the peninsula.

Hiking and bird watching enthusiasts will want to make a beeline for the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Oak Harbor. The refuge is a major feeding, nesting, and resting area for migrating birds and it also preserves portions of the historic Lake Erie marshes and Great Black Swamp habitats. The park has over 8 miles of nature trails that pass by most of the nesting areas. Visitors can take self-guided tours of the refuge or enlist the aid of a park ranger, who will take them around and give them information on the various avian species that call the refuge home.

For some spine-tingling good fun, head inland to Sandusky and Cedar Point Amusement Park. With 16 roller coasters, Cedar Point can lay claim to the title of "most thrill rides in the world." In addition to the roller coasters, there are over 20 rides aimed at younger children. There is also an 18-acre water park, Soak City, for when the temperatures rise above comfortable levels. Children of all ages have taken a shine to Snoopy Rocks, an ice show featuring some of Charles Shultz's famous characters.

The Marblehead Peninsula is a vacationer's dream-come-true. Head to Port Clinton for the African Safari Wildlife Park. Take a boat out to Put-In Bay and visit the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum, which is where 100 years of nautical heritage come alive. Step back in time and visit the charming village of Elmore. Whether it's lying on a beach or heading out into Lake Erie, the Marblehead Peninsula has the music to soothe any savage vacationer.
