About Martha's Vineyard Rentals
Martha's Vineyard, located just a few miles off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a combination between a dreamscape and a working fishing island. Serene and tranquil, the island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Bay. The Vineyard is a great choice for a Massachusetts vacation. A day can be filled with walking the streets of the quaint towns and harbors or indulging in more active pursuits like fishing, swimming, sailing, parasailing, bicycling, or soaking up some sunshine on one of the many gorgeous island beaches.
A trip to the Vineyard is incomplete without taking a stroll along the streets of Edgartown and seeing the homes that are excellent examples of Greek Revival and Federal architecture. The cream of the crop is the Dr. Daniel Fisher House, an opulent Federal mansion.
Another can't miss sight is the Vineyard Museum, operated by the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society. There are several buildings on site including the Thomas Cooke House, a pre-Revolutionary structure that once served as a customs house. The museum has had little renovation since the 19th century and contains relics of the Vineyard's whaling heritage.
Away from the history and charm of the various towns, the beaches on the Vineyard offer something for every sand lover. Outside of Edgartown is the wonderfully scenic Lighthouse Beach. This is a great spot for watching the boats drift in and out of the harbor. One of the most secluded beaches on the island is Lucy Vincent Beach, just outside of Chilmark. Lined with red and brown clay cliffs, this wide stretch of sand is a visual oasis. Families with small children will want to visit Oak Bluffs Town Beach in Oak Bluffs. The calm waves offer an excellent opportunity for the little ones to get their feet wet. For total seclusion, head to East Beach on Chappaquiddick Island. This is still one of the island's best kept secrets and is easily accessible by the "Chappy Ferry."
A great way to see the Vineyard is by putting your car in dry dock and puttering around the island on a bicycle. The Vineyard is full of smooth, well-maintained paths conducive to cycling bliss. A good trek is the Circle the Island Tour, which takes visitors through the up-island towns, out to Aquinnah, into the working fishing village of Menemsha, and back down-island.
Bird watchers and nature enthusiasts will enjoy the island's commitment to nature preservation. The Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, outside of Edgartown, is owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The visitor's center is staffed with naturalists who take visitors on guided bird watching walks. The Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary, near Tisbury, has a series of hiking trails that eventually lead to a panoramic view overlooking Vineyard Sound and the neighboring Elizabeth Islands.
Martha's Vineyard just may be the perfect vacation destination. Excellent restaurants, sleek boutiques, fashionable shops, historic scenery, and active pursuits are all set in a visual wonderland. In the summer, the island is filled with a frenetic energy that befits a tourist haven. During the other months, the pace is slow and deliberate. Just what the doctor ordered for a relaxing retreat.
