Northern Georgia may be the best kept secret in the south. The area is a year-round playground, complete with mountains, pristine forests, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and streams that will please any outdoor enthusiast. Georgia's past is highlighted in the many Civil War attractions that will delight any history buff. A day in Northern Georgia can include hiking, swimming, fishing, white water rafting, kayaking, shopping, or pulling out your camera for a memento of the incredible scenery and attractions.

Georgia played an important role in the Civil War.History buffs will want to visit the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park in Fort Oglethorpe, where the sight of the bloodiest two-day battle of the Civil War took place. The park also commemorates the Battle of Chattanooga. A seven mile loop tour features markers and monuments placed by the states after the war. Commissioned in 1890, the battleground was the first Military Park in the US. It is part of the Blue-Gray Trail, a series of interlinked sites dedicated to preserving Georgia's rich Civil War history.

If you didn't know better, you might think you had landed in Germany when visiting the small town of Helen. This Alpine village is complete with cobblestone alleys and Old-World architecture. The town's Oktoberfest runs from September to early November and is legendary for its great food, lederhosen, polka music, and beer that flows like a river.

If it is fun in the sun you seek, the majority of Northern Georgia is surrounded by the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. The two forests total almost 1 million acres of public land and offer a wealth of active pursuits. Hikers will appreciate the many trails that twist through the forests, including the southernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, which continues all the way to Maine. Another popular hike is the Bartram Trail, which extends 37 miles from the Georgia-North Carolina border to the west fork of the Chattanooga River. Hikers can attempt the trail en masse, or pick different portions depending on their skill level.

You don't have to go to Montana to find excellent fly fishing. The Chattahoochee National Forest has plenty of lakes, rivers, and streams where you can toss in a line. Andrews Creek offers anglers the chance to catch both rainbow and brown trout while the Chattahoochee River offers a perfect spot to get away from it all while casting your flies. Cooper Creek offers both excellent trout fishing and a festival of hiking opportunities. Lake Russell, located close to Clarksville, offers the opportunity to nab some bass, sunfish, catfish, and crappie or take a swim and a moonlight cruise.

Both canoeing and white water rafting are popular endeavors in the forest. The newly opened Toccoa River Canoe Trail starts at the Deep Hole Recreation Area and flows 13.8 miles to the new take-out at Sandy Bottoms. In addition, the Chattooga River has some Class III rapids that will thrill anyone with a rafting bent.

The Georgia mountain region is a combination of excellent elements rolled up into one beautiful vacation destination.
