About Berkshires Rentals

The Berkshires, located in western Massachusetts, are a playground for all those who love the Great Outdoors. Flower filled valleys rise to meet the highest mountain peaks while hiking trails meander past bubbling streams and over rocky drumlins. The small towns and villages that dot the landscape are as pretty as any in America. A day's itinerary in the Berkshires can include hiking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, white-water rafting, golf, antique hunting, or visiting one of the area's many historical sights.

Tiny Stockbridge was used by Norman Rockwell for his famous covers on the Saturday Evening Post and in the calendars he created for Brown & Bigelow. Original paintings by Rockwell can be seen at the Norman Rockwell Museum, located on the grounds of an estate near the edge of town. Also in the area is the William Cullen Bryant Homestead. This boyhood home of the famous poet has been turned into a National Historic Landmark and is filled with furnishings and mementos of Bryant's work and travels. The homestead and its surrounding countryside inspired much of young Bryant's poetry such as "The Rivulet" and "To A Waterfowl."

Hiking enthusiasts visit Massachusetts while tackling the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Maine to Georgia. 90 miles of this long-distance footpath are in Massachusetts, running along the ridges and traversing the valleys of Berkshire County. More hiking, as well as biking, rollerblading, and taking a scenic stroll, can be found on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, a former railroad corridor converted into a 10-foot wide paved path. The trail runs through the towns of Cheshire, Lanesborough, and Adams.

Antique collectors flock to this part of the state, seeking out tiny little shops that may hold some hidden treasure. Sheffield has shops featuring the largest selection of 18th & 19th century painted furniture from Sweden, Denmark, and Europe. Great Barrington has a reputation for jewelry, art glass, and other fine decorative arts.

The winter cold brings white hot fun in the form of some of the best skiing on the east coast. Ski Butternut in Great Barrington has 7 lifts that whisk skiers to 22 runs and over 110 acres of terrain. The Notchview Reservation has over 30 km of cross-country ski terrain. Primarily a beginner and intermediate mountain, Notchview also has some hair- raising runs that will challenge any expert. Otis Ridge bills itself as a family mountain, and caters primarily to beginner and intermediate skiers.

The many state parks and other recreation areas offer an array of outdoor activities. Palmer Brook Lake in Becket covers more than 125 acres, and is chock full of large mouth bass. Gardeners and those with a leaning toward botany will want to visit Bartholomew's Cobble, which is home to over 700 plant species.

Western Massachusetts has something to offer every vacationer. The rivers and lakes offer excellent fishing and sailing opportunities while there are plenty of cultural experiences in the Berkshires to satisfy every artistic pallet. The Williamstown Theatre Festival is a nationally known theatre offering everything from classics to the latest musicals. If you want to learn more about Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick, visit Arrowhead, the estate where he penned his famous work. The Hancock Shaker Village provides a fascinating glimpse into a Shaker community's life, including buildings, furnishings, and amenities. When visiting the Berkshires, remember to bring your hiking shoes and your camera since you will be on an adventure to remember!
