Details for Il Castello in Spoleto, Umbria, Italy

San Mamiliano was a fortress/castle built by the Vatican in the 10C to protect its boundary with Perugia. In the middle ages, the Pope would stay here on his way to Rome. It consists of 1 main 'road', several tiny alleys, a myriad of ancient archways and 3 piazzas. And, it is totally pedestrian. Perfectly located to see the rest of Italy, it is in the Apennines, just left of the centre of Italy, between Terni and Spoleto and it takes 20 minutes to drive to the nearest train station. As part of a restoration project, Il Castello, a large, comfortable house, was tastefully restructured to architectural standards. Unfortunately, these medieval buildings are too old to have retained all their original features internally. So, instead of having the inside cosmetically restored to look old, we opted for a light, airy and modern ambiance for both Il Castello + L'Arco. The exteriors, however, have been faithfully restored, alongside the other ancient dwellings in 10C San Mamiliano.

    We provide for free all utilities....towels, linen etc plus unlimited central heating/hot water, wood for the fire plus a generous Welcome Pack...wine, pasta fruit, all the condiments, olive oil, bread, tea, coffee, sugar etc. Indeed, we try to provide for every eventuality.

    A booking during the Christmas period attracts an extra tariff of 100 euros/week, minimum, in addition to the extra daily tariff.

    Parking is free, in the piazza, just a 1 minute walk from the apartment.

    Days in addition to a week are costed at the weekly pro-rata rate.

    Bookings taken on a daily basis attract an extra daily tariff.

    We operate an any day arrival/departure policy.
  • HOW TO GET TO US :
    -Fly to Rome, Ancona or Perugia then take the train to Spoleto.

    -Cheap flights with Ryan Air to Rome and to Perugia

    -Car hire available from Avis either from the airport and we will send you directions or, alternatively, if you take the train to Spoleto, then, providing you book through the local Avis, and NOT the general Avis, Avis will deliver a car to Spoleto station for you if you request it.   • On the top floor there are 2 double bedrms, each with a double bed, (1 has spectacular mountain views, the other has views overlooking the village and the hills beyond) and 1 bathroom (full size bath, shower, loo and washing machine). On the ground floor, there are 2 double bedrms and a 2nd washing machine. One of the double bedrms is very large with the original “arrow” windows and a very low arched entrance that harks back to the days when humans were much smaller. The 2nd room on this floor is smaller and contains 2 twin beds. The large bedrm is accessed via the smaller twin bedrm because the stairs are open-plan and wind down the side of the wall of the smaller twin room. That said, at the foot of the stairs, you turn left through the arched door-way into the large bedrm and, as you turn right, you are facing the smaller twin room. So, disturbance is minimal. There is room in either of the 2 large sitting rooms for single beds. The 2nd shower room/WC is on the middle floor.

Notes:

There are stairs in the apartment but there are hand-rails everywhere. It is only a few metres from the piazza to Il Castello and L'Arco. A mobile phone is available on local rates for a refundable deposit of 100 euros. It operates on a card system that you buy for whatever value you want. It is the system we use and it is very cost-effective ! The kitchen is fully fitted with microwave, fridge-freezer, a separate fridge etc. There are 2 washing machines. The furnishings are elegant and comfortable. The SKY Satellite TV has many, many English speaking channels e.g. BBC, CNN, FOX and a whole host of documentary, sitcom, cartoon and pop music channels. The most beautiful communal pool is 5 mins down the hill by car in the little village of Ferentillo. It is superb - because it was built by the mayor, who lived next door, and didn't have a pool of his own ! Here, there are also tennis courts.
