Crystal River Area: Fun in the Sun on Florida's Nature Coast!
The Crystal River region of Florida is a vacation destination for those who want to get away from the hectic pace of other more touristy Sunshine State attractions, and reach out and touch Mother Nature. Located on the northern portion of the Gulf Coast, the Crystal River area is off the beaten path, not highly developed, and an absolute must for those who want the Florida sunshine without the Florida hype. Much of this area has been set aside as national, state, and county parks and preserves. A day's itinerary in and around Crystal River can include swimming, snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, leisure cruises, or pulling out your camera and taking a snapshot of one of the area's natural attractions.
Both the Crystal and Indian Rivers twist and turn through Citrus County, offering outdoor recreation of all description. The rivers are home to those docile manatees, likened to big cows that swim. The manatees are a top draw in the region, and snorkelers and scuba diving enthusiasts flock in droves to swim with them. If you like your attractions on the dry side, river cruises take you within sight of these friendly animals. Anglers also enjoy the river's waters. Knowledgeable captains are available to take you to all the best fishin' holes.
Nature enthusiasts will want visit the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, located about 65 miles north of St. Petersburg in Citrus County. The refuge covers over 31,000 acres of saltwater bays, estuaries and brackish marshes at the mouth of the Chassahowitzka River. Since 1941 the refuge has been protecting over 250 species of birds, over 50 species of retiles and amphibians, and at least 25 different species of mammals, including the endangered West Indian Manatee. Sea turtles and bald eagles are just a couple of the refuge's residents. Structured boating, fishing, and educational programs can be part of your time in the refuge.
For an up close and personal view of the manatees, as well as other members of the local wildlife, head to Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. The park is for people who want to see the local wildlife, but don't necessarily want to spend time in the wild. An underwater observatory guarantees visitors year-round access to the manatees. You may find yourself mere inches away from these jovial creatures, albeit with a thick piece of glass between you. Wildlife Walk, a boardwalk system of almost 2000 feet, threads its way around a variety of wildlife exhibits and habitats providing great viewing opportunities to see bobcats, cougars, otters, bears and hundreds of birds. The newly opened reptile exhibit gives you the opportunity to see some of Florida's venomous and non-venomous reptiles.
The Crystal River area skirts the Gulf of Mexico, an absolute lotto of aquatic activities. Boating is a popular pastime in the Gulf, as literally hundreds of sea captains are available to take you sailing, on a sunset cruise, island hopping, or even air boating. The Gulf's waters are teeming with fish, making anglers giddy with excitement as they toss in a line hoping to land redfish, Spanish mackerel, cobia, and gigantic tarpon.
The Crystal River region of the Gulf Coast of Florida has something for every vacationer. Drive over to Brookville and visit the Hernando Historical Museum, which displays artifacts relative to the area's Civil War history. Duffers and low handicappers can tee it up at the Plantation Inn & Golf Resort in Crystal River. Lovers of America's favorite pastime will certainly want to check out the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame in Hernando. Of course if you want to base yourself in the area, Orlando and all the Disney attractions are within a day's reach. If a vacation surrounded by the wonderful sights and sounds of Mother Nature is your idea of heaven, then the Crystal River Region is just the place!
