About Los Angeles County Vacation Rentals
Catalina Island, off the coast of southern California in the Channel Islands, has been the weekend holiday destination for native Californians for decades. But the island is slowly gaining fame with the rest of us, and is developing a world renown reputation as a vacation paradise! That shouldn't be any great secret, considering the natural beauty and laid back atmosphere of the island. A day in Catalina can include hiking, swimming, fishing, sailing, wind surfing, parasailing, water skiing, scuba diving, surfing, or just lying on a beach, basking in the California sun.
Avalon, set among a luscious green mountainous backdrop, is Catalina's largest town and the cultural hub of the island. Walking Avalon's gorgeous streets, visitors might get the feeling they had stepped in a time warp, whisking them back to the early 20th century. The architecture is a blend of Mediterranean and Victorian homes. Take a walk along the Avalon Pleasure Pier and look back at the entire town and its crescent of mountains. Make sure you find your way to the Avalon Casino, a famous hangout for such illustrious big band magnates as Count Basie and Tommy Dorsey. The casino has appeared on countless post cards and travel posters. Downstairs, the Catalina Island Museum has a small but interesting collection of local artifacts.
The beaches on Catalina Island range from rocking centers of activity to secluded, get-away-from-it-all hidden nooks and crannies of beach fun. Crescent Beach is for those who want to blend their tanning time with the frenetic activity that surrounds the most popular spot on the island. Facing the harbor, one side of the beach is flanked by a ferry dock and on the other by the Avalon Casino. The harbor protects the beach from the waves, making it an excellent swimming destination.
