About Gold Country / High Sierra Vacation Rentals
Calaveras County, California has a rich history with stories about the Gold Rush, famous Wild West figures, and famous names like Ulysses S. Grant and Horatio Alger. The county was permanently placed on the map in 1865 when Mark Twain wrote The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, his first published short story. Today, Calaveras County is a vacationer's paradise. A day's activities can include hiking, mountain and road biking, fishing, swimming, skiing, nature retreats, and just about anything else you fancy in the High Sierras.
There are numerous outdoor activities to partake in at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Hiking and cycling enthusiasts will appreciate the many trails that meander through the park along with the giant sequoias that are preserved by Calaveras’ State Park status. Anglers can toss a line in the Stanislaus River and Beaver Creek. To learn more about the Park, consider a guided tour with a ranger or take your children to a junior ranger program aimed at educating them about the park's flora and fauna.
More outdoor fun can be found in neighboring Stanislaus National Forest. The park has over 80 miles of rivers and streams, and it offers some of the best hiking in all of California. Mountain bikers will enjoy the scenic views as they pedal along the excellent loops and trails while hikers have over 35 trails to choose from, ranging from easy to difficult. Naturalists and eco-tourists will appreciate the solitude of the park's many trail heads. Stanislaus is also an angler’s dream with over 800 miles of rivers and streams and over 15 species of fish awaiting them.
There are also numerous golf courses in Calaveras County to suit every skill level. Forest Meadows Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones II design in a beautiful mountain setting with pines, cedars, and oaks. Greenhorn Creek Golf Resort is also popular with visitors to the area.
